The Second Step Raises $325,000
at Celebrating Success

Anonymous Angel Gift of $50,000 Inspires Giving

Funds Benefit Domestic Violence Survivors and Children

“I received a clock at the first Celebrating Success, and it sits on my mantle today as a quiet symbol of my time at The Second Step. Thank you to all those who gave me and my daughter a hand up instead of a hand out. Every volunteer in the playroom. Every staff member. Every person that gave a donation or gave legal representation. Every grant writer and board member. You have all made my live the success that it is today. You planted the seed of hope and the spirit of caring in all those lives you have touched. You are my heroes.”

–Lori, 1993 graduate of The Second Step

On Thursday, May 8, 2008, over 600 enthusiastic guests gathered to support and honor 16 graduates of The Second Step. The event raised over $325,000, making it the most financially successful event to date for The Second Step.

The audience, many with tears in their eyes, applauded the graduates’ achievements with a standing ovation. Guests were especially moved by the remarks of speakers Lori and Heather Smith. This mother graduated TSS 15 years ago, her daughter was two at the time, and went on to lives not only free from abuse but also filled with wonderful accomplishments.

On behalf of all the brave and special people making the journey from violence to self-reliance, The Second Step is profoundly grateful to the efforts of event co-chairs Roberta Carson and Patricia Hinchey, and their entire committee of volunteers, as well as all the sponsors and supporters who gave so generously. It was indeed a magical night.

Comedian Cory Kahaney provided laughs, while auctioneer Charles Bailey-Gates entertained the guests in his own unique way. One lucky winner at each table went home with a set of beautiful Lalo candlesticks. Celebrating Success is a night of inspiration. Together, we are helping domestic violence survivors and their children build safe and promising futures.
