The Second Step Announces Capital Campaign to Meet Costs of Expansion
To meet the costs of expansion, The Second Step officially launched its Step-by-Step Capital Campaign in February 2002. The campaign is co-chaired by board members Ruth Dzau and Susan Pettit and includes many other supporters. Campaign funds will be used to renovate and furnish the new house, to renovate the current residence, and to enable The Second Step to expand programming.
The campaign goal is to raise $3 million, with a goal of raising $1.1 million from individuals, foundations, and corporations. Gifts from private sources committed by September 1, 2002, will trigger funding from generous challenge grants totaling $300,000. As of March 2002, we have reached 54% of our private dollar goal. Public agencies are funding the balance.
A successful campaign will enable The Second Step to save 500 women and children from homelessness and provide outreach services to an additional 1,500 over the next decade. We will continue to help the women acquire job skills and find employment. We will enroll the children in the Newton Public Schools or daycare and provide a therapeutic after-school program for elementary school children. We will also connect families to mental health services, job training, and other needed resources in the community and help them find affordable housing. To make sure families continue to thrive after they leave The Second Step's residential program, we will provide follow-up services to help them settle into new homes and new lives.
Help Break the Cycle of Domestic Abuse, One Family at a Time
You can help us build a new future for families who have suffered domestic abuse. As a community we all bear the cost of domestic violence. We must all work to address the grave need for long-term programs and transitional housing where survivors can live safely with their children and rebuild their lives. We must help these families find a way from violence to self- reliance.
You can become involved in the campaign in several ways:
- Contribute to the capital campaign
- Host a house party or business breakfast
- Make in-kind donations
- Volunteer your time
Contact the Second Step office at 617-965-2026 for more information on how you can help us break the vicious cycle of domestic violence. Together we can transform our communities and their lives.
